That the administrators would exclude hiring those of higher IQ, because they would "quickly get bored with the job and leave" is one of the dumbest things I've heard of. F***ing bureaucrats must be limited to those of below average IQ, with that sort of idiocy coming out of their mouths. Both are competitive shooters and both are Sheriff's Deputies in So California. I met Laurel at SHOT. She's really cool. Was a high school teacher who got pissed off when one of her students was molested and decided being a LEO was one of the best ways to stop it. IIRC, the national average hit percentage is 17%. That includes hits ANYWHERE on the targets body. Hit his little toe, that's counted. I'm pretty sure that includes shots at dogs, and suicide attempts. The best dept is the CHP, with a 25% average.

One of the odd observations that I have made is the apparent drop in hits with multiple officers firing at the same person. The more shots fired, the lower the results are. I haven't seen these numbers broken out officially.

My tentative theory is that knowing a group is shooting with you, some people make the unconscious decision that they don't want to kill someone, let the others do it for you. But, everyone keeps firing until an obvious ending, or lack of ammo, or very loud commands to stop.
Another possible factor would be the auditory trauma of a bunch of guns firing close to you, without hearing protection. That can definitely affect ones accuracy, along with the disturbing out-of-cadence shots that might spoil any rhythm you may be used to for shot to shot timing.

I've talked to a number of officers over the years, and most tell me they only practice when on the clock, and even there it is not popular. CHP goes every month, and they mostly wait 'till the end of the month, and have to be reminded/pushed to get their butt to the range.

Back in the 90's, it was common for depts to weed out applicants that had gun experience, for political purposes. Probably still going on. People who start shooting as children have an advantage over others. They would be the natural talent for SWAT or Stakeout type groups.Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00722792638246578812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4146148016062694502.post-69880951976745924802015-04-24T21:41:36.323-04:002015-04-24T21:41:36.323-04:00This is why I also practice on my own more than I ...This is why I also practice on my own more than I shoot in training. Shooting skills are perishable. But unmentioned here is the effect of the stress you are under in an actual life or death situation. As for the novices shooting almost as good as the experts, I'll say this. If you can't hit the target with most of your rounds at 3 to 15 feet, you don't need to be carrying a handgun on the job.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4146148016062694502.post-55287096675440589312015-04-24T15:14:28.055-04:002015-04-24T15:14:28.055-04:00Roger's Shooting School does some longer than ...Roger's Shooting School does some longer than average training courses.
