Happy Repeal Day!

Amendment 21

(Ratified December 5, 1933)

Control of Liquor Returned to the States

  1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.
  2. The transportation or importation into any state, territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.
  3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in the several states, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the states by the Congress.

Prohibition of "intoxicating liquors" as embodied in the 18th Amendment was repealed 84 years ago today. To slightly paraphrase President Gerald Ford who was speaking on an entirely different matter, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare was over".

We in the gun rights community should be especially happy to celebrate Repeal Day even if one is a teetotaler. The reason is that this period of time led to the rise of organized crime and its attendant violence. We are still living with the fallout from that area as we still have to pay a $200 tax for each and every suppressor, SBR, SBS, full-auto firearm (made before May 19, 1986), etc. that we want to buy and register. Without Prohibition and the attempted assassination of FDR, we probably wouldn't have had this gun control monstrosity imposed upon us.

So tonight I plan to raise my glass to Sen. John Blaine of Wisconsin who introduced the resolution calling for the 21st Amendment.

  1. In Virginia, with a coupon, you can get 20% off the 25% higher prices due to the fact that you’re buying from a state run liquor store to celebrate repeal day, Yay !
I redeemed a bottle of Woodford special reserve, toasted cherry malt edition. Go big, or go home. Last year, I picked up the exorbitantly expensive Wild Turkey master’s keep decades. Both are great bourbons, just very pricey.

    1. I hadn't heard of the Woodford special reserve before. Given that it's Virginia, you might have thought they'd have a special bottling of one of the Abraham Bowman line of bourbon. The only discounts we get in ABC stores in North Carolina is when a local board decides to close out something or have a couple of dollars off special on something they want to move. That said, the first bottle of Elijah Craig with the real 12 y.o. age statement cost me all of $15. That was 10 years ago but....

  2. speaking of... A. Smith Bowman have rolled out a new port finished Bourbon, Isaac Bowman. It’s a blend based on the Abraham port finished, and very true to the original. it’s 92 proof vs. 100 for the old Abraham, but it’s very good. it’s at the Distillery now in Fredericksburg ( Frednecksburg) but is rolling out to at least VA ABC stores. I have somewhere north of 10 port / red wine barrel finished bourbons, Belle Meade, Magnus, Jeffersons, Amador, 1792, and I know I’m forgetting many, but the Bowman has been my favorite.

    1. Funny you should mention that. I bought a bottle of it yesterday and tasted it last night. It is very nice.
