HR 822 Passes The House 272 to 154

This afternoon at approximately 5:50pm, the House of Representatives passed HR 822 - the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 - on a vote of 272 aye, 154 nay, and 7 not voting.

The ayes were comprised of 229 Republicans and 43 Democrats. Meanwhile the noes were comprised of 147 Democrats and 7 Republicans.

There was only one amendment adopted prior to passage and it was Amendment No. 10 proposed by Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA). This amendment would order the General Accounting Office to study "the ability of state and local law enforcement authorities to verify the validity of out-of-state concealed firearms permits." It was adopted on a voice vote. All the other amendments were either withdrawn or failed.

The Republicans who voted no were Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), Rep. Robert Dold (R-IL), Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY), Rep. Peter King (R-NY), Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA), Rep. Robert Turner (R-NY), and Rep. Robert Woodall (R-GA). Of these Republicans, Dold holds the suburban Chicago seat formerly held by anti-gunners Rahm Emanuel and Mark Kirk. Grimm, King, and Turner all represent districts either in or adjoining New York City so I think you can see the fine hand of Mayor Bloomberg at work there. Finally, I can't explain Woodall's vote other than a fit of pique at having his amendment defeated and I have no clue about Amash or Lungren.

The full list of the Ayes and Noes can be found here. If your Representative voted Aye, send them a note thanking them. If not, ask them why the heck not!

Now it is on to the Senate where it may or may not pass.

  1. Rahm didn't hold Kirk's and Dold's seat, he held the seat currently held by Quigely and formerly by Blago...

  2. Lundgren is a total POS and a typical pro-gun control Democrat from California. You can completely disregard the "R" by his name, it was "in" last season, so he went with it for variety.

  3. @David: Thanks for the correction. I get the suburban Chicago districts mixed up.

  4. Amash is trying to recycle the old States' Rights argument, along with the Brady bunch.

Apparently he has never heard of the 14th Amendment, or the full faith provisions of the Constitution.

Republicans in his district need to remember this decision to side with the Bradyites and the old slaveholders in 2012.

  5. I live in the next county over from Amash's district. So I went and checked his Facebook page today to see what he had to say.

His first argument against it was basically NAGR propaganda, ooga-booga Eric Holder, something something.

The second reason was that it's an abuse of the commerce clause, and the bill does contain language that brings it to bear only on firearms involved in interstate commerce. It's a BS way to make it Constitutional, IMHO, but I watched John Roberts explain to Dianne Feinstein why the Lopez case was lost basically because the original bill didn't contain any references to interstate commerce. So, if you want a gun bill to stick it'd seem crazy not to put it in there rather than hope SCOTUS comes around and tries to put some meaning into the 14th via privledges and immunities.

  7. Another minor correction, John, Quigley's 5th (which is my district) is partially suburban and partially Chicago proper.

He got into that slot the Chicago Way, of course...get slotted to fill the vacancy then appease the Machine to prevent them running another Democrat against you in the primary.

  8. Why did Sheila Jackson-Lee vote FOR this amendment?
She has NEVER supported any anti-Brady action in her career that I can remember...

  9. Peter King should be noted as the right arm of The Jerk Bloomberg. He knuckles under to everything the mayor says. His BS on the transportation bill and commerce act is well known. He even conspired with the Governor that had no job so Daddy Created one Coumo to ruin the LIRR, the largest commuter rail road in the country. I guess the appointed President, a black woman with no knowledge of railroading was a move to help our gay President.

  10. I just hope the PEOPLE remember the GOP and Dems that voted against the rights of the people they were elected to uphold come election time. Even the so called president violated his oath of office he swore to uphold.

  11. McCarthy of NY has a right to be bitter. But she is blind to the fact of Peoples rights. If a gun totting person was on the train that night, a lot less people would have been shot or killed. So technically it is her fault no armed citizen was on board. She must have a weak spot for the black man that shot her family. Oh his name was Collin Ferguson an educated black man with a GUN. It only proves that an illegal gun can be gotten anywhere, so why not penalize the normal people and violate the constitution.

  12. This passed in the House even by Democrats, because they all knew Ahead of time the Senate and friend of the NRA Harry Reid would shove the Bill HR 822 aside and never bring it to a vote. So like all Democrats they look good to their constituents, but lie to their faces. This Bill did not have a prayer in hell of passing in the Senate, with the Dems and remember CLINTON behind it.
