World Class Snark

I love snark. The tweet below is, in my opinion, world-class.

As most probably know, that Irish-American former congressman from Texas by the name of O'Rourke has decided to run for president. I'd wager that if he were forced to take an Ancestry DNA test, the only Spanish blood in his veins might have come from a survivor of the Spanish Armada that washed ashore in Ireland.

Cheer to entrepreneur and business advisor Carol Roth for giving us the proper pronunciation of O'Rourke's first name.

This Flag Offends Me

I look at this flag and see within it the flag of a nation that oppressed my mother's people from the Middle Ages until the first part of the 20th Century. A nation that forbid primogeniture to my mother's people which, when combined with their callousness, led to over a million dead men, women, and children from starvation. This, while my ancestors' homeland was a net exporter of grain and other foodstuffs. While that nation didn't consider it a genocide, many of my mother's people most certainly did.

It is also the flag of the nation that my father's people fought to gain their freedom. Their independence, if you will.

My mother's people came from County Cavan, Ireland while parts of my father's people were in America before the Revolution.

That nation that oppressed my mother's people and with which my father's people fought in a revolution is of course Great Britain.

The flag to which I refer is the state flag of Hawaii which celebrates its friendship with the British with the Union Jack in its upper left corner.

If the social justice warriors are really serious about getting rid of any symbol that smacks of oppression, I demand then that they get rid of the flag of Hawaii.

It is also the flag of the state where the President was (probably, possibly, potentially) born. Given his goal to out-Nixon, Nixon, I see it doubly as a symbol of oppression.

I won't go so far as to demand that the graves of famous Hawaiians be dug up but that flag has to go.

Which To Attend? Decisions, decisions, decisions.

My Mom got an email today from the Brady Campaign. I guess at this point I should mention that she passed away almost six years ago, but I digress.

The Brady Campaign is having their very own Brady National Summit in Washington, DC in June. The announcement and details are below:
The Brady National Summit will take place June 9-10, 2014, at the Washington Marriott at Metro Center, with a cocktail reception on the evening of June 8. This year’s theme is “Bring It Home!”

The summit will feature experts, thought leaders, key advocates from across the country, and fellow Americans who have been personally impacted by gun violence. Participants will hone the skills needed to effectively engage friends, neighbors, media and elected officials in our national conversation about gun violence, and learn about what they can do in their community to help reduce gun violence.

The summit will close with a powerful day of citizen lobbying, as we join together to spread our message throughout the halls of Congress!

Join us for three days of education, inspiration & empowerment on reducing gun violence in our country.
The cost to attend this soiree is a mere $50. And more importantly, it will feature thought leaders! I guess these are the people who tell the thought police how to prosecute thoughtcrime.

And speaking of thoughtcrime, my alternative to the Brady National Summit is the NRA Annual Meeting which is free, is not in DC, and not full of Debby Downers.

Which to attend? Such a hard decision. Or not.

Screw it! I'm going to ignore the thought leaders and chance the thought police to indulge in thoughtcrime in Indy and I going to have a helluva time doing it.

Quote Of The Day

I don't always agree with Peggy Noonan, former Reagan speechwriter and current columnist for the Wall Street Journal. However, she does have a way with words.

In her column yesterday in the Wall Street Journal, part of the discussion was about the other woman in David Petraeus' life - Paula Broadwell.  After pointing out all the attributes that Broadwell ascribed to herself including author and biographer, Noonan has this to say.
She calls herself a biographer, but biographers actually do something arduous—they write biographies.
Broadwell, for those that aren't aware, used a ghostwriter for the book All In: The Education of General David Petraeus.  If you think about it, Paula Broadwell was nothing but a highly-rewarded research assistant while Vernon Loeb, the ghostwriter, is the actual biographer.

Its For The Children

The constant refrain of the gun prohibitionists is that guns or standard-capacity magazines or ammunition must be banned because "its for the children".

I came across the picture below in today's Wall Street Journal in a book review. The Cage deals with Sri Lanka and how the country's marginalization of their Tamil minority lead to a 26-year civil war which only ended when the Tamil Tigers were annihilated in 2009.

While I don't approve of the tactics used by the Tamil Tigers or the official repression of the Tamils by the Sri Lankan government, it still looks to me like those kids are enjoying that see-saw. I guess you could say it is for the children, too.

Quote Of The Day

The quote of the day comes from Cemetary's Gun Blog. After noting that The Who's Won't Be Fooled Again is quite appropriate for this political season, he asks this question:
But I have to wonder, since they sing about ‘fighting in the streets’, ‘shotguns singing songs’, ‘hat tipping to the revolution’, would CSGV put Pete Townshend and The Who on the insurrectionist timeline?
Given that Ladd's musical tastes run more to America, they probably would.

Quote Of The Day

Frank J. Fleming writes for Townhall.Com and blogs at IMAO.us. His rather satirical and snarky column today is entitled "The First Term of Obama Has Been a Failure... of America." That should give you a feel for his writings.
The first term of the Obama administration has been a complete failure -- a complete failure of Americans to deserve the great president they elected.

President Obama has done everything for you. He spent billions to create you dozens of new green jobs. He's given you amazing new health care laws. He even wore a flag pin a couple of times, though that had to disgust him. And his poor wife has done all she can to put up with the sight of your fat children waddling around everywhere. And yet you shout and shake your fat fists at him like _he's_ done something wrong. It reminds me of the end of that one _Twilight Zone_ episode where everyone screams when they see the beautiful woman, because they all have pig faces, and she's different from them. Well, Obama is the delicate beauty, and you're all the ugly, pig-faced idiots whose sight should repulse and terrify him.
 Read the whole thing here.

Quote Of The Day

Peggy Noonan is one hell of a speechwriter. While I disagree with her vehemently on occasion, she does write well. The quote of the day comes from her column in today's Wall Street Journal discussing Mitt Romney and the Republican convention in Tampa. As noted elsewhere, the Obama Administration, in a rather tasteless gesture, (and is there any other kind from their ilk) is sending Joe Biden to Tampa during the convention.

It is good that Joe Biden is going to the Republican National Convention to hold high the flag of his party. People make fun of his gaffes, of his embarrassing verbal forays, but he's no fool and he knows how to take it to the other guy. The speech he is working on, to be given in the heart of downtown, just across from the convention site, will be stirring and stentorian: "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Tampa, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, 'Ich bin ein Tampon.'"

I wish that were mine. It came in the mail from a Hollywood screenwriter, one of the gifted conservatives who quietly toil there.

I wonder if Joe does poorly in Tampa will they pull his string.

My Nomination For The Citizen's Medal

Thanks to a post by Sebastian at Shall Not Be Questioned, I was alerted to the opportunity to nominate a worthy individual for the Citizen's Medal. It is the second-highest award for civilians awarded by the United States government.

The nomination form asks why my nominee should be awarded the Citizen's Medal. Here is what I wrote:
Mr. Nugent would be an ideal choice for the Citizen's Medal.

He has served for many years as a national spokesperson for Drug Abuse Resistance Program (DARE) and has consistently promoted a drug-free, alcohol-free lifestyle in his lifestyle and within his industry. His industry is beset by those who are suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

He is a strong proponent of healthy nutrition and has long promoted free-range grass-fed organic meat that is free from antibiotics as an alternative to industrially grown meat products.

Finally, Mr. Nugent is a strong civil rights advocate and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the largest, membership-based, civil rights organization in the United States. Through his work with this organization, he has strongly promoted civil rights in those areas where oppressive governments have sought to limit a person's freedom.
The nomination form that asks you to describe the impact of the nominee's work.
Mr. Nugent's service has had a profound impact on all of those with whom he has interacted but none so much as his work in field of civil rights.

By fighting for the civil rights of ordinary working Americans, he has stood up to faceless bureaucrats and oppressive state and local governments who would, given half a chance, suppress civil rights.

For this he has been vilified by the propaganda organs of these oppressive regimes and their followers. He has stood tall in the face of their calumny.

Mr. Nugent is a true American patriot who has dedicated his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor to fostering civil rights for all Americans.
If you haven't guessed by now my nominee for President Obama's Citizen's Medal is none other than Theodore Anthony Nugent who is better known as Ted Nugent. The civil rights organization is the National Rifle Association.

You, too, can nominate someone for this award and I suggest Mr. Nugent is a fine candidate. The deadline for entries is April 24th. Given how Ted is being attacked by the ne'er-do-wells in the mainstream media as well as by the gun prohibitionists, I say overload them with Ted nominations.

Quote Of The Day

When multi-millionaire NBA stars are joining "million hoodie marches" and when you are shocked that the name "Trayvon" was not uttered in the news round-up on CBS Sunday Morning, you know the whole Zimmerman-Martin affair has jumped the shark.

Thrown into this media circus is a sage, yet snarky, comment from Tam:

I wish the media would find another ball to chase soon. I have never hoped for some random celebrity to choke on their last cookie so hard in my life. Elton John would probably do. He'd wipe the whole Zimmerman/Martin thing right off the front page, and he's kinda past his Sell-By date, anyway. I mean, all he's done in the last twenty years is release more re-recordings of songs about dead blondes, right? Come on, Elton, how about leaning in over the plate and taking one for the team?

I can see the epitaph now - "He was just walking down a yellow brick road listening to some crocodile rock and dreaming of being a rocket man when he was beaten by a deaf dumb and blind kid (who) sure plays a mean pinball."

Snark Of The Day

Instead of calling this the Quote of the Day, it really is snark so I'll call it the Snark of the Day. It comes courtesy of a Tweet by Iowahawk. It combines both of the scandals du jour of the Obama Administration.
The EPA is reviewing my $1 billion bid to make solar machine guns for Mexican drug lords.

I Can't Believe It Took Them This Long

The Violence Policy Center has finally released a Tweet castigating Glock and the Second Amendment Foundation over Glock's significant donation to SAF. The donation was announced on Thursday, August 11th. As I said at the time, I wonder what snide comment the VPC will make about it. Now we know.

@VPCinfo
Gunmaker Glock helps fund SAF's efforts to overturn gun laws to, of course, sell more guns. http://t.co/A8d7bKb

Frankly, I'm surprised that that it took them this long to respond. I expected it the same day. I guess they are not only ineffectual but inept as well. Good!

I Blame Soy Milk For This

The Outdoor Pressroom has a story today about decorating for the eco-conscious vegan man.
... we see items like this "green recycled cardboard" deer head, promoted as "taxidermy without the guilt." Made for the "modern, eco-conscious vegetarian man" who wants to "use interior design to demonstrate his masculine, yet environmentally sensitive, attributes."
The story has a link to the website GreenProphet.com which has a whole story about an Israeli company named Crembo making the cardboard deer head mounts.

Karen Chernick, the author of the Green Prophet article, writes:
In centuries past, mounted deer (or other animal) heads were considered a type of trophy – an item that illustrated the skills and capabilities of the hunter who killed the deer. If a man had a deer head on his wall, you would assume that he was virile, manly, capable of taking care of his little woman and kids, and probably a few other things as well. But what is the modern, eco-conscious vegetarian man to do when he too wants to use interior design to demonstrate his masculine, yet environmentally sensitive, attributes? Play on the classic mounted deer head and hang a “green” cardboard version.

Demonstrating masculine attributes by displaying a cardboard deer head? I'd call it faux deer for faux men.

As I said in the title, I blame all those estrogens in soy milk.

From A Gun Show In Boise?

As Tom Gresham has said, we must close the submarine loophole! I wonder if this is what Carolyn McCarthy means about the gun show loophole?

The full story can be found here. The sub had a crew of around six and could make the whole voyage to the U.S. submerged.

Part II - Not A Sport

According to the study on the importation of shotguns just released by ATF, they don't consider this event a sport and so many of the shotguns used here would not meet the sporting test of the GCA of 1968.

Compare this with Part I and think about which requires more athleticism. A bonus feature is that the competitor is using a Saiga shotgun. You know, one of those evil, no sporting purpose, shotguns.

Part I - Sport

According to the ATF, this would count as a sport and meet the sporting test if they were allowed to regulate croquet mallets. I mean you could kill someone with those mallets and the best ones are imported.

Cry Me A River

Colbert King, in an op-ed in today's Washington Post, laments that the expected increase in the number of conservatives and Republicans in Congress after mid-term elections doesn't bode well for the District of Columbia's autonomy. Pardon me if I am not sympathetic especially when he writes:
What's more, a new Congress, under Republican influence, is likely to give the District more of what it doesn't want.

Expect, for example, a renewed effort to weaken D.C. gun laws and restrict the D.C. Council's regulation of firearms. Gun-rights forces tried to do that this year when they attached pro-gun language that ultimately derailed voting rights legislation. The Nov. 2 elections, if all goes as predicted, will only strengthen their hands.
I guess we should be happy that the District has been run by foolish politicians or we never would have gotten the Heller decision. Mayor Adrian Fenty's intransigence led to DC's appeal of the Court of Appeals win for Dick Heller. This, in turn, led to the Supreme Court acknowledging, finally and concretely, that the Second Amendment is an individual right.

So to assuage Mr. King's sorrow, I send him this nice rendition of "Cry Me A River" sung by Susan Boyle.

Making Change

Tam has a great post on the lack of math skills and young cashiers.

I can't count the number of times I've had to help a cashier out so that he or she could give me the correct change.

Wonderfully Delightful Snark From Tam

Tam skewers Obama on his constant need to bash Bush for the economy.
It's all your stick now, baby, and quit whining, because you asked for the job. Now you have to do it. Maybe if you'd actually stuck around and finished a job after you got elected rather than immediately getting bored and starting to campaign for your next gig, you'd know that. Right now the gig it looks like you're stumping for is "ex-president".
Damn! I wish I could write snark that well.
