This Makes Me Sad

For many years I have been posting the SHOT Show videos created by Jeff and Boge Quinn of Gunblast.com. I just learned that they won’t be at SHOT this year due to Jeff’s health issues.

I’ll let Boge fill you in at the video below. As for me, I hope and pray his health improves and we see him at SHOT next year.

SHOT Show 2018: Gunblast.com Day 1

While I'm still editing the video I took from Industry Day and Day 1 of the SHOT Show, here is a good look at what is coming out from Jeff Quinn at Gunblast.Com. It appears he went to a lot of booths that I have not been to yet.

SHOT Show Day Three - Gunblast.com

The highlights of Jeff Quinn's third day at the SHOT Show include the Sig Sauer P320 X version, Rob Pincus' Avidity P10, and a unique barreled rifle from the Italian firm Sabatti. I will say I learned something about rifling as I had never heard of multi-radial rifling which sounds quite intriguing as it helps increase velocity and reduce bullet drop at longer ranges.

On the second day of the SHOT Show, Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com interviews folks from Smith & Wesson, KelTec, Ruger, and a number of purveyors of cowboy action revolvers.

SHOT SHOT Day One - Gunblast.Com

Jeff Quinn in this report on Day One of the SHOT Show starts off with a great interview of Ruger CEO Mike Fifer. The other highlights were a Colt representative talking about the reintroduced Colt Cobra and a discussion by Linda Powell of Mossberg's new 590 Shockwave shotgun. This latter product is quite interesting in that it is a pistol-gripped 14" shotgun that does not require a NFA tax stamp.

Disclaimer: Although the Mossberg 590 Shockwave is classified as a “firearm” under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), and is not subject to the provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA), state and local laws may be more restrictive. Even though, it is legal federally, the 590 Shockwave may be considered a “short-barreled” shotgun or “assault weapon” by certain state and local laws; and therefore illegal to possess. Please check with your local authorities concerning the legality of possessing a firearm of this configuration.

Checking North Carolina law, 14 NCGS § 14-288.8.(c)(3) classifies a shotgun as a "weapon of mass death and destruction" if it has "a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches." If you have a Federal tax stamp then possession of such a shotgun is permitted. As I read this - and I'm not a lawyer - the shotgun must be both greater than 26 inches overall in length and must have a barrel of 18 inches in length or greater. By using "or" instead of "and" in the description of such a prohibited shotgun the legislative intent is that both conditions must be met. This leads me to say that this is a law that needs changing as I'd like one of those shotguns!

UPDATE: Regarding North Carolina law and the legality of possessing the Mossberg Shockwave, I received this message on Facebook from fellow blogger Chris Maynard.

It is not a shotgun because it never had a stock, rather a pistol grip from the factory... If it was under 26" in length, it would be an AOW... But over 26" makes it a "firearm"... Per federal law...

So that should mean that it is not restricted by NC law supposing they follow the federal definition of "shotgun"

But the same statute also restricts " Any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell of a type particularly suitable for sporting purposes) which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter" so this gun should qualify under that.

Industry Day At The Range - Gunblast.com

The SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range (former Media Day) was held yesterday. It is the opportunity for the media and dealers to actually try out the new guns that are being introduced at the SHOT Show.

Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com always does a great job of covering a wide range of guns. I've used his videos over the year's to show the new firearms. Jeff doesn't just cover the big names but also devotes some time to smaller manufacturers. This year he seemed to give a good deal of time to Standard Manufacturing of Connecticut. They introduced a number of firearms including an engraved, color case-hardened Single Action Army as well as a 1911 with similar engraving and a charcoal and bone case color-hardening.

Among the other firearms covered include the Ruger Precision Rifle in 6mm Creedmoor, the Cobalt Kinetics AR-15, the Mossberg 500 short-barreled any other weapon, and, of course, the Colt Cobra. The Cobalt Kinetics, by the way, uses their double forward assist to also drop the bolt. That is innovative.

Prayers For Jeff (Updated)

I received the following this morning from a reader who is an old friend of Jeff and Boge Quinn of Gunblast.com. Yesterday, I posted three of their videos regarding items at the SHOT Show.

Jeff is in a Nashville’s St.Thomas hospital ICU with severe pneumonia. He passed out and the impact from the fall caused a brain bleed.

 This is terrible news. Please keep Jeff and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

UPDATE: I received an update on Jeff's condition and the news is good - or at least better.

Jeff is still in ICU at St. Thomas but should be moving to a regular room tomorrow as his vitals are now in the typical range. 3 days ago, he wanted to go over a list of pall bearers today he was talking about what guns he needs to shoot and do articles/videos on.

The brain bleed as the result of the blow to his head that he suffered when he fell did not result in a stroke, and there is no reason for concern at this time. He is off of oxygen, and off the constant IV antibiotics. His kidneys have also suffered no further damage from the antibiotics or from working to draw-off excess fluids – no worse and no better, but stable is a good thing.

He still feels awful, but his condition is improving.

2016 SHOT Show Day Three: Gunblast.com

Hybrid AKs which incorporate many of the features of the AR-15 seem to be growing in number. On Day Three of the SHOT Show, Jeff Quinn features two of them. The KF-47 comes from Palmetto State Armory and the M10X Elite Hybrid 7.62x39 is available from MM-Industries.

Alexander Arms is coming out with a 180 grain bullet specifically designed for the .300 Blackout. It will be be available in their subsonic cartridges. Many of the heavier bullets up until now have been .300 Mag bullets used in the .300 Blackout cartridge.

I'm glad to see that XS Sights is coming out with suppressor sights for 1911s with a Novak cut. They currently have them for Glocks.

2016 SHOT Show Day Two: Gunblast.com

Who would have ever thought Colt would have released a semi-auto M4 carbine for less than $700? I guess that is one of the "benefits" of their bankruptcy. Jeff Quinn interviews Colt about it. The carbine doesn't have a dust cover nor a forward assist. That said, it is a simple matter to add them to the carbine if you want them.

What I consider the major find from Day Two is the Inland Manufacturing-Ithaca collaboration on a reproduction of the Ithaca 37 Trench Shotgun from WWII. It will retail for $1200. I'm not sure if it comes with the bayonet or not.

2016 SHOT Show Day One: Gunblast.com

Jeff Quinn does a good job of covering some of the new product introductions at the SHOT Show. He came across a number of things I wish I had seen. Given the size of the the SHOT Show, it is no wonder I missed them this year.

For example, the Italian gun maker Pedersoli is now making a .45 Colt/.410 "pistol" modeled on the old Ithaca Auto and Burglar shotgun. For those who don't know the history of the Auto and Burglar, it was a short barrel shotgun with a pistol grip in 20 gauge. It was made from 1921 until the passage of the National Firearms Act in 1934.

Another interesting find was the new 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum cartridge. This was the first new cartridge introduction by Weatherby in the last 17 years.

2016 SHOT Show Industry Day At The Range - GunBlast.com

Since I only made a part of Media/Industry Day at the Range, I think this 2-part report by Jeff Quinn at GunBlast.com gives a better picture of what was shown there.



I did get to shoot the new revolver from Kimber. It is a six-shot, double-action only .357 Magnum revolver. I found the trigger pull to be smooth and the revolver controllable by even me while shooting .357 Mag ammo. I would have liked to try it with some .38 Special to get a better feel for the gun without the concussion but beggars can't be choosers.

2014 SHOT Show - Day Three With Gunblast.com

Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com starts off his overview of Day Three of the 2014 SHOT Show with the new S&W L-frame based .44 Magnum revolver and concludes with Ascendance International's rail systems made out of nTherm. These provide heat protection along with the Picatinny rails. In between these two are companies like Bond Arms, Winchester, and Lipseys.

In his overview of Day Two at the 2014 SHOT Show, Jeff Quinn starts out by interviewing Rob Leahy of Simply Rugged leather. I have one of his pancake holsters for my Colt Detective Special along with a belt pouch for a speed strip which is truly ingenious.

Among the others also shown is Caracal which has introduced a chassis-based rifle. Unfortunately, they didn't discuss the problems with the Caracal pistols which resulted in a total recall.

As the 2014 SHOT Show came to a close yesterday, I realized that I still hadn't posted these overviews from Jeff and Boge Quinn of Gunblast.com.

In the video below, Jeff looks at a number of new firearms including a 3-Gun AR from Colt Competition which guarantees a MOA at 100 yards.

2014 SHOT Show - Media Day With Gunblast.Com - Part 2

In Part Two, Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com again previews a number of new firearms being released at SHOT Show.

Included are a number of revolvers from Smith and Wesson including the reintroduced Model 66, the Model 686-6 in .357 Mag, the 5-shot 460 S&W Magnum, and the Model 986 in 9mm. This last gun seems to have very minimal recoil with the 9mm.

Speaking of low recoil, Armalite has introduced the AR-31 .308 Target Rifle that has a muzzle break more like one would see on a Barrett .50 BMG rifle.

Sig Sauer held their portion of Media Day at a separate range from what I understand. Jeff shot the new Sig P320 which is their first striker fired pistol and the Sig MPX submachine gun. It is a damn shame that the Hughes Amendment prevents us from being able to buy one of those because it looks like a great gun.

2014 SHOT Show - Media Day With Gunblast.Com

Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.Com shows a number of the firearms and optics that he tested at Media Day. Contrasting with last year, it doesn't seem quite a cold and windy.

Among the firearms shown in the video below include the Glock 41 and 42, the Ruger American Rimfire, the Double-Star Compact Constant Carry SBR, and Colt Competition 14.5RR. The optics shown include scopes from Burris, Trijicon, and MSE.

2013 SHOT Show - Day Three With Gunblast.Com

Jeff Quinn is back for the third and final day of the 2013 SHOT Show. He starts off his report with an interview with Mike Fifer, CEO of Ruger, who explains their fast and easy way to contact your representatives to say no new gun control. I think Ruger needs to be applauded for taking this stand. So far over 500,000 people have taken advantage of this tool in less than a week. Fifer is correct that we need to get this up to 20 million or more.

Jeff also profiles the UTS-15 bullpup shotgun, the Sig 227, sights from XS Sights, a carbon fiber AR from Windham, some Ruger exclusives from Lipsey's, and Smith and Wesson Performance Center pistols.

2013 SHOT Show - Day 2 With Gunblast.Com

Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.Com is back for day two of the SHOT Show with more firearms, knives, and accessories. It was interesting to see the Caracal 9mm carbine as I had heard about it on the GunDudes mini-podcast from the show.

One of the manufacturers interviewed was Newtown Firearms of Placerville, California. You have to wonder how much grief they have been getting from the gun prohibitionists over their company name.

2013 SHOT Show - Day 1 With Gunblast.Com

Jeff Quinn of Gunblast.com is one of my staples for seeing what is going on at the SHOT Show. This year is no different. On the first day of SHOT, he interviews representatives from Tactical Solutions, Savage, Barrett, and Para-USA among others.

That suppressed Barrett in .50 BMG is sure to have the state-run media aka the mainstream media sputtering with false outrage.

Jeff Quinn of GunBlast.com shows some of the new stuff that was available for test at the 2013 SHOT Show Media Day. He shows some cool stuff on what looks to be a frigid and windy day in the desert.
